Delmarva's Dorin Turchin's three-run double capped off 6-2 comeback win for the Northern All-Stars
CHARLESTON, W. Va. (June 18, 2019) - Delmarva's Doran Turchin, the Bush's Baked Beans South Atlantic League All-Star Game MVP, delivered a three-run double in the eighth inning to power the Northern Division to a 6-2 come-from-behind victory over the Southern Division at Appalachian Power Park Tuesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 6,237 fans.
Delmarva starter Grayson Rodriguez kicked things off with a dominate first inning of work, as he retired three of the four hitters he faced, with the only base hit allowed to Canaan Smith. Rodriguez's outing started a back-and-fourth battle between each pitching staff throughout the first five innings.
For the Northern division, relievers Bryan Pall, Yerry Rodriguez , Drew Rom and Zach Matson combined for four innings of work and allowed just two hits. Smith's first-inning single and Michael Gigliotti' s third-inning double were the only Southern base runners before the fifth inning.
The Southern staff was just as impressive in the first half of the matchup. Lexington's Austin Cox worked a perfect first inning with three groundouts. He was followed by Seth Corry in the second inning, who tallied two strikeouts in his inning of duty. Asheville's Alexander Martinez also managed a three-up, three-down inning in the third and Greenville's Logan Browning entered in the fourth.
Browning's inning got a little dicey after the Northern Division loaded the bases on three singles, but the Southern escaped the inning with a ground out and kept the game scoreless into the fifth. Both squads delivered a scoreless fifth frame before the pitcher's duel started to shift in the sixth.
Columbia's Ronny Mauricio doubled to right-center with one out and Brandon Lockridge stepped in for his first plate appearance of the game. The Yankees' farmhand delivered with the game's only homer, as he deposited an Ofelky Peralta fastball over the right-field wall, breaking the scoreless tie and putting the South in front 2-0.
The Northern lineup answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Pedro Gonzalez that cut the Southern lead in half at 2-1.
Rodolfo Castro led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, and Jonathan Ornelas singled to put runners at first and second with no one out. Following a groundout that advanced the runners, a wild pitch allowed Castro to score from third and tied the game at two.
Later in the inning, the Northern squad loaded the bases for Delmarva's Turchin, who delivered his bases-clearing double into left-center field and thrust them to a 5-2 advantage. The combination of Kannapolis' Johan Dominguez and West Virginia's Dayeison Arias tag-teamed the ninth inning to close down a scoreless frame and secure a 6-2 win for the Northern All-Stars.
The Power will return to Appalachian Power Park following the All-Star Break on June 27 to face the Kannapolis Intimidators and Hickory Crawdads. For tickets and more information, call the Power at 304-344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
